Brad

I grew up in England, Worthing. My first passion was Rollerblading, I started this at a young age when I saw a documentary on aggressive skating, from then on I was hooked, I saw the streets light up in a new view and this was my entry to loving freestyle sports.

Kitesurfing came on the Scene when I was 15 and the moment I saw it on the TV I was wanting a kite desperately but being 15 I couldn’t afford this new sport. The idea of flying was what I wanted to achieve, its was my dream wish as a kid. Even though I couldn’t get the gear I new I would in the near future. My good mate Lewis Crathern and fellow skater bought a kite what must have been 2003 and we messed around on it with no fear as we had no understanding that the power this could generate, with in a few minutes we were hooked.

My life is now in New Zealand where I run a kiteboarding school (www.assault.co.nz) and am a kiteboard instructor. After work activities now consist of Paragliding, Surfing, working on music in my home studio. All my dreams from school have basically come true, i also ride for Airush as a national team rider.

Once I got my kite set up I made a goal of getting known in the area I live (Mt. Maunganui) I was working as a salesman in an appliance store and kited everyday possible before and after work on my own. A local legend Dave Edwards was on the scene riding really short boards and throwing shit everywhere, he just bounced from one trick to the next and I took on board what he was doing as I thought it was a good direction to push myself in, I took my style to the NZ Nationals and it worked.

I have entered comps in NZ and on the Kite pro world tour ( KPWT ), and I don’t enjoy the competition idea, the judges are usually guys that cant even ride, I only enter to showcase what I am up to. You can’t judge kiteboarding properly, it doesn’t work.

I now enjoy passing on my years of knowledge of all aspects of kite surfing to people who are keen to get into the sport, i get great satisfaction watching people get their first buzz when they first feel the power, get up or their first jump. I travel over winter to exotic warm locations teaching new and intermediate riders new skills, this also gives me a chance to work on some new tricks and make new friendships.

Right now there are a few new directions i am working on with a kite, Also working on freestyle flying with wings both acrobatic paragliding and speed flying.

The future is exciting.
